A wan is a network with the purpose of connecting networked computers that are located far away with the use of long-range telecommunication links. We use telephone system to make phone calls from work or from home, while in wans, communication for over long distance use telecommunication links in order to communicate. The enterprise wan and the global wan are the two types of wans. The main difference between an enterprise wan and global wan is in the ownership, which means that enterprise wan is owned by a company or an organization, while the global wan is not owned by a firm but has the ability to cross national boundaries.
Setting an example for a wan would be a company, networked together, sharing information privately and securely, using the internet or public telecommunication lines, in different countries or cities. The features of this kind of a wan are PCs, routers, TC/IP protocol, and other devices that are used to transfer and receive information back to each other.
A good example of this setup are the local, state and federal police agencies wherein they are setup with the objective of sharing information among the various departments when there is a need. With this setup, it allows sharing of information also to other states agencies and all over the nation. Even with the complexity of the system, every component functions and operates as independently as each of the network.
Several organizations are offering this technology and there are also many documents that would help you understand as to the how, what, etc of this product. You have to do your own research too if you want to make sure about this technology which by the way new products are being designed now. With many connections now available, this service is now incorporated as a bundle. In the same manner as most technologies, these kind are hosted and protected with firewalls.
Networks do not anymore require the kind of bandwidth that is exclusive and expensive. It is not as expensive now to acquire this bandwidth provider because there are a lot of competitions going on among these providers. Thus, when IT engineers would have a problem, their solution would be to upgrade their bandwidth.
The data transmission will speed up a lot when there is an upgrade of bandwidth. But sometimes service can still be slow even with the improvement of bandwidth. This can be attributed to the latency which is the period needed for a packet to transfer from one assigned point to another point.
Sometimes slow data transmission can be attributed to the poor bandwidth performance or management. Even with more bandwidth applications, the imbalance application could also be a source of the problem.
